Leyduin offers solutions to improve biodiversity for grassland and forest areas, activate existing buildings for restaurant and events and develop a communal food garden.
The country estate Leyduin is only a small part in the story of the estate zone of Zuid-Kennemerland, but one of the most fascinating. In four hundred years four different country houses have been on different locations on the estate. The first water extraction for the city of Amsterdam was initiated and realized here in the 19th century. At the same time, a lust landscape in the wild dune landscape was created by well-known Dutch landscape designers, such as Zocher, Snoek and Springer.
The landscape design for Leyduin is more than a single design or design style. The current situation is the result of several designers and residents throughout the centuries. Leyduin Estate reflects different trends and eras and has been formed in more than four hundred years. As a result, a visible historical stratification has arisen. The aim for the Leyduin design is to make this biography readable and transparent. The power of the design lies in the tension between the different design styles and time-bound influences and especially between the formal and informal landscape structures. The tension of the natural topography between the open plains of the (peat) meadows and the wooded heights of the old dunes also plays an important role.
The spatial structure of Leyduin consists of several basic ingredients, height differences, forest areas, avenues, gardens and open plains. These ingredients have become partially invisible over time and are in danger of disappearing from the landscape. We want to give a to these qualities an impulse by improving the structure of the landscape so that it can offer counter play against loose developments. When sharpening the spatial structure and making the spatial ingredients visible again, a new spatial layer is added to the original structure in an almost silent way.
